Pietersen Makes His Mark

Test Cricket got underway again with the 1st test match against South Africa at Lord's with England getting the better of the first days play having reached 309-3.

Inevitably Kevin Pietersen had a point to prove against the country of his birth and he duly delivered with 104 not out which was his 13th test century ably assisted by Ian Bell in an overnight partnership of 192.

Much has been made of the four-pronged South African pace attack and in that respect they remind me a little of England during the 2005 Ashes series although this pitch was damp and therefore not the fastest but it may yet dry out as the match progresses and be more conducive to pace bowling.

The South African quickies will no doubt have their say at some point in the series although they yet again still lack a top quality spinner so the four tests should be closely contested although when the one day series arrives England will struggle to beat the Springboks.

After a lack of application at times against New Zealand playing the Worlds number two ranked team will hopefully bring out the best in England which it should if they are serious about winning next years Ashes series.
