England did well to defeat the West Indies with two days to spare but that is exactly what they should be doing if they are to have any hope of an Ashes win. Some people said the wicket at Lords was flat but it was nowhere near as flat as some of the pitches the West Indies groundsmen served up over the winter. On the recent Caribbean tour, the England bowlers actually bowled to Sarwan’s strengths allowing him to fill his boots. In this test match, it was refreshing to see those lessons have been learned.
Ravi Bopara helped himself to another hundred and barring a dramatic loss of form he is certain to keep the number three position. You cannot argue with two centuries in two test matches and he is now the man in possession. Later this summer he will face stiffer challenges than this Windies bowling attack offered him.
Graham Onions had a tremendous debut although Australia will be a different proposition if he retains his place. He does not possess express pace but is accurate and bowls at the stumps which is something the England attack has not done enough recently. Onions will develop into some player if he can generate some more pace.
In the spin bowling department Swann continues to look a far better selection than Panesar. He offers aggression as well as runs with the bat plus he has no problem taking wickets.
England has got off to the perfect start and the team can only beat the opposition that is put in front of them. Taking wickets and scoring runs against Australia and South Africa will prove to be an entirely different proposition.

Well, it is definitely a question now, who will bat at number 3 in English team, given the recent performance of Bopara and Waghan.
